HerCar Review
The Volkswagen EOS convertible is a great car to drive. It’s not too big and not too small. To put it into perspective, it’s a bit longer and a tiny bit wider than a Golf. The model reviewed has a powerful turbo petrol engine that delivers 147kW power, so getting to the shops is a blast! If you’re not into this level of power and still want the style and exhilaration of open air driving, then you can opt for one of the diesel models. It’s a 4 seater, so if you need to shuttle around 4 passengers on a regular basis, this is probably not the car for you (unless you’re happy to convince one of them to catch the bus!) Unlike the convertibles of yester year, it has a hard top that cleverly manoeuvres itself into the boot at the touch of a button. When you don’t want the wind through your hair, but still want that feeling of freedom, just use the sunroof!
Driver Comfort & Visibility
The Eos has a quality, sporty feel to it. Both driver and passenger seats are electrically adjustable to get the perfect driving condition. Both front seats are heated for when you insist on driving with the top down on those chilly days! Everything is in easy reach including the audio control mounted on the steering wheel which has a mute button. It’s has power windows, power steering, power mirrors, cruise control and remote central locking.
As a 2 door coupe, visibility is a little limited out of the rear with the roof on; however, when the roof’s off it feels like you can see the whole world!
Safety
The Eos has a great list of safety features including driver and front passenger front, side and head airbags. It’s also got Electronic Stability Program, ABS with Brake Assist, Anti Slip Regulation and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. The rear parking sensors let you know if there is anything behind the car when reversing and there is also a sensor if there is an obstacle in the way when opening the roof. As a convertible, there is also an active rollover protection system that protects all occupants in the event of a roll over.
Comfort
Climate control air conditioning is standard as is a 6 disc CD player with MP3 compatibility. It’s got a great sound system with 8 speakers. There are 2 x 12 volt sockets located in the front and rear.
Seating
There’s room for 4 passengers, with generous space for your 2 rear passengers. The seats are great quality leather and you have a choice of colours including a 2 tone tan and black. Access into the rear seats is made easier as the front seats have a button on the side that electrically moves the front seats forwards and backwards.
Storage
There are some clever storage options including a chilled lockable glove box, small centre console tray, larger storage compartment in the driver’s side dash, a small nook in the centre armrest and pockets on the rear of the front seats. There are also door pockets that can hold a water bottle. There are 2 other drink holders located in the front centre that will firmly hold your takeaway coffee cups. The boot space is limited as this is where the roof gets stored. You can however fit 2 small overnight travel bags into the boot, even when the roof is off. If you have longer items like snow skis, you can place them through a centre hole that goes from the boot to the rear seat.
Kids’ Comfort and Safety
If you’ve got 1 or 2 kids or grand kids then this car could be OK for you. There are 2 child restraint anchor points located on the back of the rear seats and room for booster seats or baby capsules.
Green Factor
The Eos Turbo FSI consumes about 8.2 litres per 100kms, combined cycle. Of course, if you choose to thrust yourself forward (within the legal speed limit) on many occasions, this will make it a lot thirstier. If you’re looking for better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions, then the manual diesel is the go. It consumes about 6 litres per 100kms combined cycle.
Overall View
The EOS Turbo FSI is a fantastic, fun car to drive that exudes Volkswagen quality and style. It’s a car for those who enjoy driving and want to treat themselves!
