The Fast and the Foolish

OK I admit it, I have, on occasion, exceeded the speed limit.  Really, who hasn't, not even by accident?

A recent survey by motoring site TMR revealed that, generally speaking, motorists have a distinct disregard for speed limits.  Of these respondents however, most of them exceeded speed limits by about only 5km/hour.  In my opinion, that's hardly a menacing motorist.  To be honest, I think that it's bloody ridiculous to be fined for exceeding the limit by 5km/hour on a 2 lane, dry straight road!  If the authorities are concerned with road safety, and the road toll, I suggest that they start handing out fines to stupid drivers. On many occasions I find myself questioning how some motorists ever got a license.

When it comes to reducing the road toll, wouldn't it be better to ensure that drivers know how to handle a vehicle, rather than just focusing on speed limits?  Can they handle a car on wet roads, do they know how best to brake in an emergency, what happens if their car skids? Now these are lessons worth learning.

Don't get me wrong I don't approve of speeding drivers but I think that a greater emphasis should be put on driver training. Unfortunately fines raise money whilst driver training costs money.......
