Good for Nothin' Cup Holders.

If car manufacturers have the technology to prevent me from a full lock skid, surely they can get the cup holders right?  Is it really that hard to master?  Do I have to buy a Porsche to get a good cup holder?

Whenever I rant about this topic, the divide in opinions becomes obvious. Some people rate cup holders to be as critical as airbags, while others think they're a ridiculous waste of space. Perhaps no cup holders is a better option - you are supposed to be driving after all.  But without cup holders, where would I store my mobile phone, safe from a cross cabin slide when I hit the brakes or take a corner?

I only ever drink bottled water in the car, Pump, actually, and that bottle doesn't fit in any cup holder I've come across.  Is there a cup holder R&D grant? Does anyone have good cup holders? Do you conduct a cup holder check when buying a car? Is it mostly a kids/family concern? Spill your thoughts, please.
